Who we are
Our focus areas are improvement of health service delivery and training. We also have a dedicated charity
program targeting economically disadvantaged groups of our society- YeEteye medical Charity (የእትዬ በጎ አድራጎት).
Furthermore, we advocate for quality education, leadership and collaboration as a tool for sustainable health
care and societal development. Hence the name “HELP” which stands for Health, education, leadership and
partnership.
How we started it
HELP Ethiopia is established by a group of doctors and other professionals based in Ethiopia and diaspora. Our
YeEteye Charity was initially founded by a fund granted in memory of Woizero Yewoinshet Seifu by her family
members who used to call her “Eteye”. As the name “Eteye” is a nick name used by many Ethiopians to refer to
their dear mothers, elder sisters, and other caring members of a family, it is endorsed by HELP ETHIOPIA to be
used as official name for its charity branch. The support was maintained primarily through generous donations
of Ethiopians in North America but also by support from local partners.
As the founders and members of HELP ETHIOPIA are practicing doctors, nurses, university professors,
researchers, social workers and health sciences students, we happen to observe and face the ongoing challenges
of health service delivery and training. Though it is satisfying to see helpless patients being supported
through our charity, lack of sustainable solutions to poor health service delivery and training is a source of
perpetual disappointment. It was for this reason that we decided to use our unique advantage of having members
with knowledge, skills and experience in areas of advanced health service delivery and higher education and
the support from different local and international partners. The goal is to achieve sustainable health service
development through innovative and evidence based local interventions!
What we do
Through our charity Program, Ye’Eteye Charity, we have been supporting many patients on treatment primarily in
Tikur Anbessa Specialized hospital (TASH). These patients have passed through many hardships to come to
hospital and most were about to quit the care and go to their hometown without completing their treatment. In
YeEteye Charity, we accept request for support from treating doctors, nurses and patients themselves. We work
closely with social workers and care providers in identifying eligible patients and reach out to them to cover
their expenses for medications, imaging and laboratory tests until they showed visible improvement in their
clinical condition and get discharged. Nevertheless, the demand is too high and we could not reach to more
patients with treatable disease due to our limited financial capacity.
Education
Through our education department, we have different programs to support health science students overcome the
challenges of higher Education. We strive to equip them different skills, including but not limited to
leadership and research. We are preparing to launch a Scholarship program to assist medical students whose
training is compromised due to financial constraints.
Student research program is designed to introduce health science students to practical aspects of
problem-solving health research which is not adequately addressed indifferent health science colleges
throughout the country. HELP ETHIOPIA attempts to engage students in different aspects of health research to
help them gain experience from conception to publication.
Leadership and partnership program
Sustainable, high quality health service delivery relies on quality health work force training. It needs to be
directed by innovative leadership tools and collaboration with reliable local and international partners. We
play our share in identifying the gaps with this regard and try address them with the relevant stakeholders.
